Unicentro

Twenty years ago two educational units in Paraná state – FAFIG from Guarapuava and FECLI from Irati – merged to form Universidade do Centro-Oeste do Paraná, UNICENTRO, today acknowledged all over Brazil and abroad. From the State Law No. 9,295, dated June 13th 1990, new courses were created, physical structures improved, professors and university agents were hired, providing a continuous expansion at Unicentro.

Seven years later, in 1997, the institution was legally acknowledged as university. Currently, Unicentro is comprised of 738 teaching staff, 8,619 students enrolled in presence courses and about 1,400 students enrolled in distance education courses. Unicentro is composed of Santa Cruz and CEDETEG campi in Guarapuava and Irati campus. In the current context where a lot is expected from the public institutions, Unicentro has fulfilled its role as a fostering agent of economical and social integrated development of mid-west and center-south regions in Paraná state, directly benefiting dwellers in 50 cities, whose population adds up to about 1 million people.

Concentration area of Post-Graduation Program: Crop Production

Research Interests

Managing Large Crops: It has as objective to develop scientific and technological knowledge about cultivation of the main annual crops with economic importance, with emphasis in grain production such as corn, soybean, wheat and barley, which stand out in the center-south region of Parana state. The main topics of interest in this research line are: irrigation, fertilization and mineral nutrition, pest and disease control, soil handling and conservation, genetic improvement, biotechnology, production systems, storage, plant growth regulator and ecophysiology and cropping system.

Horticulture: It has as objective to broaden the scientific and technological knowledge in the horticulture area, comprising the sub-areas of olericulture, fruit growing, aromatic and medicinal plants and floriculture. The main themes to be studied in this area are: fertilization and nutrition of plants, pest and disease control, plant coverage handling, organic and integrated production systems, post-harvest and processing, horticulture plant physiology, ecophysiology, genetic improvement, biotechnology, protected cultivation and irrigation.

About the course

The Stricto Sensu Post-graduation program in Master’s degree level of the Agronomy course was created by the Resolution No. 009/2006-COU/Unicentro with the activities starting in March of 2007. It was acknowledged by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) through the Ordinance No. 1,140 dated September 10^th 2008, published in the Official Federal Gazette No. 176 from September 11^th 2008.

It is offered on average 20 entries per year. The student has to take 30 credits to conclude the master’s degree.

The Stricto Sensu graduate course in agronomy, Doctorate level, was created by the Resolution nº 20/2013 – COU/UNICENTRO, and started on March 2014. It was recognized by Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) by the ordinance nº 526, June 17^th, 2014, published in the Official Gazette of the country in June 18^th, 2014.

It is offered on average 20 entries per year. The student has to take 60 credits to conclude the doctorate’s degree.

CAPES Score: The program has score 3 in the CAPES evaluation.

Objectives:

To form capable professionals to perform several activities that require academic excellence in the Agronomy area/crop production, in teaching and in research, as well as technical excellence applied to R&D or coordination/leading position in projects and technical analysis, integrating multidisciplinary knowledge in an enhanced way, producing information and generating social and economic development in the area;
To generate technical-scientific information that meets the current needs of the society in the agricultural sciences, or to act as a source for future development;
To form highly qualified human resources that would meet demands in the family farmer production as well as large scale agriculture, the creation of alternatives that ensure the future of the agricultural production sector, the economic and environmental sustainability of rural production and the improvement of life conditions in the countryside and urban areas;
To provide and foster the integration among the society and the productive and academic (teaching and research) sectors, to promote mutual atemporal and free-access benefits.

History:

The Agronomy Master’s and Doctorate’s Programs promote a “new culture” experience with research and academic post-graduation, so far unknown to most of the undergraduate program students. Unicentro which has been prominent with Scientific Initiation can foster the vertical growth of higher education.

In the recent years, the increasing number of individual or group faculty projects, approved with funds from agencies and official entities (CNPq, CAPES, SETI-PR, MDA) in addition to institutional projects funded mainly by FINEP and SETI-PR have been enabling the implementation of new didactic and research laboratories, bringing about a positive impact in the quality of classes and researches developed in the undergraduate program as well as in the post-graduation levels. The evidence of this fact is that the implementation of the Master’s Degree program had a positive reflection in the increasing number of projects and technical advising in Scientific Initiation in the Agronomy Course.

In addition, the involvement of Master’s Degree students tutoring Scientific Initiation students and the participation of undergraduate program students in dissertation projects brings about a valuable contribution to the academic education during graduation.

In 2009 with the approval of MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture), PET-Agronomy was created. It has a fundamental role of inserting under-graduates in the scientific career and consolidating the integration with the post-graduation.
